About

Voice surgery for male-to-female (MtF) transition, more technically known as laryngoplasty, is a surgical procedure in which the laryngeal opening (I hope I've got that right) is surgically reduced in order to give the voice a higher and more feminine-sounding pitch-range.

(Those transitioning from female to male generally do not need voice surgery because male hormones naturally deepen and masculinize the voice. It is an unfortunate fact of developmental biology that female hormones cannot reverse this change, although they can halt it if taken during puberty.)
