Hormonal transition, usually referred to as "hormone replacement therapy" (HRT), commonly consists of two main parts:

  • a drug to suppress the effects of testosterone
    • the most common one is spironilactone
    • this should be discontinued if the testes are removed, as it is no longer needed
  • one or more drugs to promote feminization
    • estrogen, in various forms, is the most essential
    • progesterone is also commonly used as a suppliement
