Discord comes with the same baggage as any centralized proprietary software service. Consequently, a number of projects have arisen specifically for the purpose of providing open-source alternatives.

  • Revolt is quite usable. As of 2022-09-04 it lacks reactji (reaction emoji) and threading, but it does have more complete markup support. While technically self-hostable, however, the available clients are not configurable to use any host except the default.
  • Fosscord is more explicitly self-hostable but somehow ties in to Discord's user database. It's not clear if it can be used independently of that. It's also not clear whether there are any client apps.
