the Internet: video

Overview

This page is about internet sites oriented towards providing video over the Internet. Such sites generally fall into the following categories:

  • video sharing, i.e. sites which let you upload your own videos and view the uploaded videos of others
  • torrent sites which provide tracking for BitTorrent files (of which video is a very popular type)
  • video feed sites, i.e. sites providing produced content (with or without commercials)

Video Feed Sites

  • Joost
  • miro: open source player with streams of free, non-DRM content
    • miro vs. Joost, adapted from information on the miro home page:
      • miro: 2500 channels, all unrestricted; Joost: 250, all with DRM
      • miro has a "huge selection" of HD content; Joost: no HD content
      • miro: open source player; Joost: proprietary software
      • miro: players for Linux, Mac, Windows; Joost: Windows only
      • However, Joost seems to have more desirable content (commercial TV shows etc.)
  • Vuze
    • also allows audio and video sharing
    • some video content is for sale or rent, rather than free
    • sold/rented content is protected
    • protected content currently works with Windows only
    • very nice, interactive user interface written around the Azureus torrent application (written in Java; works well in Linux)
    • site allows users to report apparent copyright violations, but does not show any indication of whether particular files have been checked and found to be authorized (maybe none of them have, but this should also be indicated)
