Overview
A window manager is system software which, generally speaking, handles the drawing of windows on the screen: size, position, borders, standard widgets (such as buttons for closing, minimizing, maximizing, etc.) and decorations. Window managers are part of the desktop environment system software.

In Microsoft Windows, the window manager is an inextricable part of the system; in Linux, however, where the desktop environment is a replaceable part, window managers are also replaceable components.
