Notes
In the Tools/Preferences/Sounds dialogue, the phrase "Sounds when conversation has focus" means "use sounds even when the conversation dialogue has the focus". If this is not checked, Pidgin's notification sounds will not play unless the conversation dialogue is in the background -- and in some environments, may not play at all. If sounds seem to be working when you [Preview] them but still won't play when events happen, this may be the cause.
