buying a used car in North Carolina

This seems to be a rather complex process, especially if one is purchasing from a regular person instead of a dealer, so I am taking notes as I figure it out.

I'm mainly concerned about the legal mechanics specific to NC, rather than the costs and benefits of what type of car; that would be appropriate for a more general article.

The seller (not the buyer) is responsible for having the signature (whose? on what?) notarized.
