Skrill (formerly Moneybookers) is a UK-based online payment service. Their emphasis appears to be on sending money; it's not clear how useful it is for receiving money.
History
- 2001-07-27 founded as Moneybookers
- 2007-03 bought by Investcorp for €105 million
- 2009-03-09 put up for sale again at ~€365 million
- 2010-08 Skrill blocked WikiLeaks's donation collection account
- 2011-09 Moneybookers rebranded as Skrill (announcement)
- 2013-08 bought by CVC Capital Partners for €600 million
- 2015-03 €1.1 billion offered for Skrill by Optimal Payments Plc (now Paysafe Group Plc), parent company of rival Neteller
- It's unclear whether this went through or not.
- 2015-04 Skrill acquired competitor Ukash
- 2016-04 The Better Business Bureau has Skrill USA listed with a "D-" rating due to 66 complaints in the past 3 years
- 2016-08 CardPaymentOptions has Skrill listed at 1.8 out 5 (a "D") due to numerous complaints, including withholding of funds to customers
- This is still in effect as of 2017-04-21.
