Overview

Caller ID (CID, or more properly "calling number identification) is a telephone service that transmits the caller's telephone number, and in some cases their name, to the call recipient. In the United States, the information is sent as digital information encoded into an analog signal (using techniques similar to those used by telephone modems) between the first and second rings.

Notes

The following terms sometimes appear in place of the caller's name; some research is needed to find out what these may mean:

  • RECEPTION LINE
  • OUT OF AREA
  • UNAVAILABLE
