A software distribution (or "distro") is a set of software which has been assembled into a form suitable for a particular usage. The term is mainly applicable to open source software because distribution of any other type of software (i.e. proprietary) is generally very tightly controlled, and not widely available for repackaging.

Linux in particular is available in a wide variety of distributions.
