About
.org is one of the three original general top-level domains (gTLDs) created for the internet. It was originally intended for nonprofit organizations, though that requirement has not been enforced for most or all of its existence. It is administered by Public Interest Registry (PIR).
On November 13, 2019, the Internet Society (ISOC) announced that it was selling PIR and all its assets (including control of .org) to a Ethos Capital, a private equity firm. After the sale, PIR will restructure itself as a for-profit corporation.
