A greytown is a subdivision or other community that is pre-planned without the involvement of its future residents, especially:
- if the houses are of noticeably similar design or from a limited set of basic templates
- if the community's location is isolated from basic amenities (grocery shopping, schools, etc.) -- located for low cost of development rather than sustainability
The classic example of a greytown is probably Levittown. The neighborhoods described in the song "Little Boxes" also exemplify greytown.
Greytowns are usually suburban.
The term appears to have its origin in an eponymous (but unreleased) song by Charles Ross Smith.
