the Internet: video: sharing

Overview

Video sharing is the practice of uploading video files for others to download and/or view.

This page is a seed article. You can help HTYP water it: make a request to expand a given page and/or donate to help give us more writing-hours!

Copyright Issues

Copyright is often a prickly issue, as many of the uploads are copyrighted material with some commercial value, typically (though not always) uploaded without permission from the copyright holder. Many copyright holders are increasingly patrolling video-sharing sites looking for their material, and typically will issue "take-down" orders for any material they believe to be excessive. (There is some controversy over whether some of these take-down orders are themselves ethical, such as videos of official presidential debates which arguably ought to be available to everyone.)

In any case, video-sharing sites are generally eager to comply with such orders, not wanting to be shut down for copyright violation.
