Overview

A suckout is a condition in which cold temperatures cause shrinkage of suspended cables resulting in signal loss due to the cable connections being pulled or "sucked" partially or completely out of their sockets, and possibly other shrinkage-related signal loss. It may also refer to any condition in which one or more specific frequency bands are "sucked out" of the spectrum for any reason, resulting in severe signal loss within those ranges (especially in the field of audio).

(It also appears to be an unrelated term in poker.)

Note

This definition is based largely on (and extrapolated from) an explanation given to me by a Time-Warner Cable technician. It apparently reflects usage within the cable-maintenance business, though the "bandwidth" definition seems to be more widely used. --Woozle 11:01, 4 November 2006 (EST)
