[[Category:School Reviews]] Carolina Friends School is a private school on the western outskirts of Durham, NC. Founded by Quakers, and reflecting the Quaker philosophy, the school often does things differently from other schools.(For example: Students and Staff "settle in" together for 15 minutes or more in the morning, with no formal reading of "announcements"; individuals speak as they feel the need. Upper School students help with the maintenance and instruction at the school as part of "School Service" classes, or did as of 1982, when I went there; I presume this still applies.)

CFS in 1979-1982 was quite a magical place. I met people there who totally changed my life. Bad things also happened, and they didn't handle Harena's crisis very well when she was there, but they at least erred on the side of allowing the student (in each case) to make their own choices, rather than being heavy-handed and authoritarian.

CFS Needs a Wiki

It has always seemed to me that CFS needed a wiki. (Before wikis, I thought there should be a section of their website which was maintained by the students. Before they had a web site, I thought they needed... a web site.) If it had one, I could mention casually in it that I painted part of the mural which is still (as of 4/29, anyway) visible on the Pavilion wall next to the driveway, and I know who the other painters were too, and that one of them is the eponym of the "Jenny Hall Fund for Teacher Development". I don't know if that information is generally known or not. In any case, it would be a great place for past and present community (faculty, staff, students, family, etc.) to keep up with each other and the school. In the absence of an official CFS wiki, The Hypertwins invite CFS community members to post CFS-related items here in the HyperTwiki, and I will be happy to help move any articles over to the official CFS wiki if it is ever created. I would also be happy to create and/or host the wiki for them at no charge.
