Technically "MR" ([[mental retardation]]) is a type of "DD" ([[developmental disability]]), but the terms "[[ICF MR]]" and "[[ICF MR/DD]]" seem to be used almost interchangeably within the service provider community.

In order to reduce ambiguity, [[HTYP]] will be using the following rules for applying these terms:
* A facility ''specializing in'' MR but also ''accepting'' other forms of DD will be categorized ''both'' as [[:category:institution/ICF/MR|ICF/MR]] ''and'' [[:category:institution/ICF/DD|ICF/DD]].
* A facility which ''only'' accepts MR patients will be categorized as [[:category:institution/ICF/MR|ICF/MR]] only.
* Unless specifically stated otherwise, we will assume that a facility calling itself "ICF MR" is ''specializing in MR'' rather than ''excluding DD''.
