Print-on-demand retail is a form of retail business which prints requested images on various forms of merchandise at the time of sale, using digital printing techniques. Traditional printing techniques require extensive work to switch between images, making it necessary to do a large run of each image in order to be cost-effective. Automated digital single-image printing techniques render this unnecessary; large stock of a relatively small number of different merchandise types -- such as t-shirts, bags, coffee-cups, mousepads, etc. -- may be rapidly imprinted with an enormous variety of images only when someone actually wants to buy a particular item with that particular image.
